Why Liberals Win the Culture Wars (Even When Th...

In this timely, carefully reasoned social history of the United States, the New York Times best-selling author of Religious Literacy and God Is Not One places today's heated culture wars within the context of a centuries-long struggle of right versus left and religious versus secular to reveal how, ultimately, liberals always win. Though they may seem to be dividing the country irreparably, today's heated cultural and political battles between right and left, progressives and the Tea Party, religious and secular are far from unprecedented. In this engaging and important work, Stephen Prothero reframes the current debate, viewing it as the latest in a number of flashpoints that have shaped our national identity. Prothero takes us on a lively tour through time, bringing into focus the election of 1800, which pitted Calvinists and Federalists against Jeffersonians and "infidels"; the Protestants' campaign against Catholics in the mid-19th century; the anti-Mormon crusade of the Victorian era; the fundamentalist-modernist debates of the 1920s; the culture wars of the 1980s and 1990s; and the current crusade against Islam. As Prothero makes clear, our culture wars have always been religious wars, progressing through the same stages of conservative reaction to liberal victories that eventually benefit all Americans. Drawing on his impressive depth of knowledge and detailed research, he explains how competing religious beliefs have continually molded our political, economic, and sociological discourse and reveals how the conflicts that separate us today, like those that came before, are actually the byproducts of our struggle to come to terms with inclusiveness and ideals of "Americanness". To explore these battles, he reminds us, is to look into the soul of America - and perhaps find essential answers to the questions that beset us. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Tristan Morris. Islamization of Knowledge

Islamization of knowledge is a term which describes a variety of attempts and approaches to synthesize the ethics of Islam with various fields of modern thought. Its end product would be a new ijma among Muslims on an appropriate fiqh and a scientific method that did not violate Islamic ethical norms. However, some Muslims both liberal and traditional are skeptical of the approach, viewing the construction of fields such as Islamic science and Islamic economics largely as propaganda created to further the Islamist view that Islam is an all-encompassing social system.

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2005 in the subject Politics - Political Systems - General and Comparisons, grade: 65, University of Leeds, course: International Studies, 58 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This dissertation provides a comparative analysis of the strategies the New Order and UMNO regimes in Indonesia and Malaysia adopted to deal with Islam from 1965 to 1998. During these three decades, the two regimes were similar in viewing Islam as a big challenge. However, the strategies they employed to deal with it were different. President Suharto followed a two-pronged strategy of promoting cultural Islam and at the same time, emasculating political Islam. Meanwhile, the UMNO leadership embarked on their comprehensive Islamization project. As a result, Islam as a social and cultural force grew tremendously in Indonesia and Malaysia. Yet in national politics, Suharto pushed Islam from center to periphery, then since mid-1980s he courted Islam and pulled it out of the periphery again. In Malaysia, the Islamization race between UMNO and PAS moved Islam from the fringe to the center of mainstream politics. The work concludes that Islam was systematically manipulated by both regimes in the period of 1965-1998, and the two strategies led to the emergence of two different models of Islamization in two countries: a "think-tank" focused project in Malaysia and a bottom-up process in Indonesia.

Globalization, The Muslim World And South Asia

Globalization and postmodernism are on the lips of scholars in the West or East. It is argued that the debate on globalization as a paradigm is in many ways also the successor to the debates on modernity and postmodernity. This book has certainly established globalization as a central thematic in social theory and in the understanding of socio-cultural change. The present conditions of the Muslim world and their role are closely discussed in this book. Globalization is a reality now. Stenberg in his book 'The Making of a Global Islam' suggests, viewing Islam as a 'social product' and an 'ongoing discourse, concerned with authority', because those who are active in the new discourse are mostly not trained religious expertsa. Their response to the new kind of 'free-floating' intellectuals can be quite critical, as in the case of Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, himself a 'global mufti. The new global Islam shapes a different understanding of the Muslim world, which is less a geographical entity and more a world of ideas, thoughts and practice. Thus globalization acts as a condition for these new developments within Islam and the Muslim world.

Edward Said's work was the catalyst of my thesis choice. His branded works Orientalism, Culture and Imperialism, Covering Islam, the World the Text and the Critic, Out Of Place and so on were mostly the titles that shaped my concern with studying some western texts, mainly the American ones, in an attempt to study the ways these authors are viewing the other, the Moroccan in this case. Are they just picking up the pieces of information randomly and embellishing them with some artistic skills or selecting what is consistent with the clichés and prejudices they had learnt before visiting and writing about this country?
